Technical - My MythTV Article Thing.
Written by Richard Smith
Saturday, 03 January 2009

Finally, promised for a long time, my MythTV article.

For years my main solution for watching media was an Xbox running XBMC. I would store all my films, music and photos on my Fileserver and access them using XBMC. This worked great for a long time. (As long as the network cable was plugged into the XBOX).

(Drawn using a seriously advanced diagram drawing system).

When we moved house last year I decided I wanted to have an expanded solution. I didn't want to be tied to watching programs and recorded media to a single room or TV. I wanted to be able to schedule programs to record whilst I wasn't at home. I was away from home a lot at the time so I wanted to be able to carry recorded TV programs with me to view on my laptop.

MythTV seemed to fit the requirements. Yet I took so long to implement it.

Odd Bits - Are Personal Websites Dead?
Written by Richard Smith
Friday, 02 January 2009

Are personal websites dead? Well I hope not because one of my upcoming articles is about creating a personal website lol.

Getting serious for a bit I have noticed many Personal Websites that don't get updated anymore though on the other hand there are other personal websites that are.

Odd Bits - My Notes Appearing in Facebook
Written by Richard Smith
Friday, 02 January 2009

I have the RSS feed from this site import as Notes on my Facebook profile. I have just noticed that the "View Original Post" link seems to now be missing and as these notes don't contain the pictures or a link back to the site I assume they make very little sense.

Anyway these notes are automatically generated from www.richs.me.uk, looking at the Original posts on that site should inject some sense into the notes.

(OK maybe sense was to much of a strong word).

Photography - M42 convertor for Nikon at Hanimar 135mm Test
Written by Richard Smith
Friday, 02 January 2009

Yay my M42 lens converter for Nikon arrived today. Yes this is the one with the correction lens.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=360104563999

I ordered this last Sunday so delivery was quite quick considering the time of year and that it has come from Hong Kong.

Firstly I wanted to see if the focus was accurate so I compared the focus setting of a Nikon 50mm F/1.8 to a Helios 58mm F/2 and both showed that the object I was focusing on was 2m away. I then focused on an object out of my Living Room window to show that yes I can get infinate focus.

I just took some shots of my rather dirty car using a Hanimar 135mm F/2.8 wide open using my Nikon D700 and to be honest I'm pretty impressed. Quick shots, standard settings, ISO200 and the lens was wide open at F2.8.

The S60 badge of my dirty Volvo S60 R

The dirty exhaust pipe where the hot gases come out.

This image was cropped to remove my number plate.

No post process apart from the one I cropped. I will have to do some real testing of the other M42 lenses I have at my disposal.

Odd Bits - richs.me.uk moves servers again!
Written by Richard Smith
Wednesday, 31 December 2008

It only seems like 9 months since this site was last moved. That is probably because it is.

When I moved the site to a different server last time I decided that this a personal website shouldn't grow any bigger then 5GB. I made provision for a 10GB website and left it at that.

At time of writing the site is currently 17GB!

Back in April I was using the image gallery very little. It was only housing small image files, the biggest files were off my phone. Then I started to buy DSLR's which produce much larger files.

If all goes well I would like to increase the amount of Photography I do. This means I was going to needs a lot more space.

So I chucked the website on its own server! Now there are hundred's of Gigabytes for it to consume.

This means that this site is now more expensive to run so I may have to revisit some ideas for revenue generation.

Other than my ever growing picture gallery I want to finally completely re-design the site. I have the technology and vision at the moment but I'm just trying to finalise the design. New site will hopefully arrive by suprise sometime during 2009.
