News - New Photography Section
Written by Richard Smith
Wednesday, 17 December 2008

In an attempt to clean this site up a bit before I replace it I have added a new section called Photography. It is where all the Photography related entries will go. Hopefully that makes sense anyway

Odd Bits - I'm buying....
Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 07 December 2008

Richard, which laptop, desktop, camera, blender, TV, Stereo etc etc etc should I buy for wosit this year?

Well damn you for asking

This year seems hard for people as there isn't a lot of money around and well everyone seems to have every thing already.

So my advice this year is to try to buy into "system" gifts. These are gifts that have lots of add ons and accessories so you have stuff to buy that person for xmas and birthdays for years to come. Yes it's a clever idea. Games consoles for kids and well whatever for adults.

As for electronic items, during these times of recession it is probably best to avoid buy it now pay later deals and any finance deals. I recommend if you buying any type of computer then stick with the well known brands. Either buy the cheapest or most top of the range, wouldn't bother with middle of the road stuff this xmas. Netbooks (little laptops) are very popular at the moment but only if the person your buying for already has a larger computer. (Either a bigger laptop or desktop).

TV's and Stereo's, make sure you buy from a well known brand that is likely to still be around in 12 months.

Camera's, apparently digital compact cameras are still rubbish for taking pictures of anything that moves. (Source http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm).

The Nikon D40 is very cheap everywhere. I have one and it aint to bad. It's a system gift so you would have gift ideas for years

Odd Bits - No updates in what seems like ages
Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 07 December 2008

No updates for a while and I apologise. I know this keeps happening but honestly, I have been busy. Actually I'm still busy so this isn't going to be much of an update.

Firstly, for those that need ideas of what to get me for christmas. Contact me and I will send you my list . Yes, after a lot of nagging from various people (you know who you are) I have started to come up with a list of things I might like to get off Santa.

I will soon be typing up some computing related articles. Yep I said computing. I know I haven't done any for a while but my computing relating articles remain the most visited pages on this site. These will consist of recession busting ideas for business to home media solutions.

If I don't bother making any updates before the xmas period then have a nice xmas period.

Odd Bits - More Lomo Effect Photography
Written by Richard Smith
Monday, 15 September 2008

More on Lomo photography, if your reading this trying to find out about Lomo photography then it is probably wise you look somewhere else and find someone who knows what they are doing .

So I still haven't found the 50p or so to buy a Lomo camera and I haven't yet asked my Dad if I can have his. So I'm still using a Lomo effect filter on Gimp. Known as Faux Lomo. (Like Faux Fur I suppose).

So a non Lomo effect pic:

And the same pic shoved through the Lomo effect thingy:

Yes, it does say read more there, click it

Odd Bits - Lomo Photography
Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 14 September 2008

Want to know what Lomo Photography is, well Google it.

I'm not that interested in following the 10 rules layed out by the Lomographic Society
but I like the vibrant colour, vignette and focusing effects of Lomo pictures. Some examples can be found at Flickr.

I wanted to give Lomo photography a try but I don't have a Lomo camera or the 50p or so to buy one at the moment. (Think my Dad might have a Lubitel though).

Though I do have some photos I took with my Nikon D700 worth almost £2,000 and a copy of GIMP on my laptop.

So thats what I did:

Following the guide at http://inphotos.org/gimp-lomo-plugin/

Technical - Elonex Onet+
Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 14 September 2008

I will do a more complete post when I get around to it.

So I finally received a machine from Elonex. Rather then the Elonex One I ordered ages ago I took the upgrade for the Elonex Onet+ for no extra charge. (I think Elonex are looking to charge about £170 for the Elonex Onet+).

It's small and it runs rather cool. That's about it for positives at the moment. My advice at the moment is to buy a Asus eeePC 700 for the same cost.

Though when I get time I will post a picture and hopefully start hacking it.

Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 14 September 2008

What to take photos of in bad weather. Yes my camera is weather proof but going out in the rain during the last week hasn't appealed. (I've not been feeling great).

So I decided to take some photo's of stuff in my apartment.

The results:

Couple of sites for inspiration:

Viewing this on facebook, you need to click the "View original post" link to see the pics. I will get this fixed when I get around to it

Odd Bits - amstrad nc100 modem -null
Written by Richard Smith
Sunday, 17 August 2008

OK a weird title. Someone recently searched for "amstrad nc100 modem -null" and it directed them to this site.

Sorry to disappoint but I didn't have that information on my site.

Basically you cross pins 2 and 3 and straight connection between the 5th pins. You may need to also cross pins 7 and 8 but I doubt it.

So:

A                                        B
2----------------------------------3
3----------------------------------2
5----------------------------------5

maybe
7----------------------------------8
8----------------------------------7

Cheers :)
